(28 May 2015) Iraqi military forces, and Shiite militia fighting alongside them, continued their advance on Islamic State group positions at the Beiji oil refinery on Thursday.
Thick smoke could be seen billowing from Iraq's largest oil refinery, believed to have been set on fire by Islamic State militants.
Iraqi security forces have poured resources and manpower into securing the refinery, where IS have staged periodic attacks.
Iran is contributing small numbers of troops, including some who are operating artillery and other heavy weapons in support of Iraqi ground forces trying to regain control of the refinery.
Beiji is 145 kilometres ( 90 miles) south of Mosul and 250 kilometres (155) miles north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
