Eric Clarks Travel Videos - Novi Sad, Serbia - Novi Sad main walking district, Zmaj Jovina.
From Wikipedia
Zmaj Jovina Street is the main street in the pedestrian zone of Novi Sad . It stretches from Trg slobode (intersection of Kralja Aleksandra , Njegoševa and Modena streets ) to Vladičanski dvor (intersection of Pašićeva , Gimnazijska and Dunavska streets ). It is connected with the rest of the city center by Laza Telečki and Svetozara Miletić streets, but also by numerous passages in which there are shops and offices of some associations and companies.
Once upon a time, Zmaj Jovina Street was called Glavna ulica, in Austrian times it was called German Hauptgasse, after the Magazinski Sokak revolt, and after the Austro-Hungarian settlement in 1867, Hungarian Fö utca, later Lajoša Košuta Street. Between the two world wars, the call was named after King Peter I. At that time, Jovan Jovanović Zmaj had Zlatne grede Street, where his birth house was located. During the occupation, it was named after its Hungarian ally Mussolini. After the liberation, she was briefly again King Peter I, then Marshal Tito, and finally Zmaj Jovina.
There have always been shops and stores in this street, and along its length, from Trg Slobode to Vladičanski dvor, there was a market. Even today, there are many shops in it. The oldest building is at number 28 - "At the White Lion" (dates from the XVIII century, 1720). It is considered that this is one of the first houses built on the first floor in Novi Sad and represents a typical house of a wealthy craftsman of the first half of the 18th century. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the shops were open from morning to evening, and then they were cleaned and ready for late parties, and the entire strip would be turned into a promenade.
The buildings in Zmaj Jovina Street belong to different styles - from baroque, through classicism, to neo-renaissance. Most of the facades have been recently renovated, so now you can fully see the beauty of the buildings in this street. The street was ground floor last arranged during 2005 . years. The buildings have been reconstructed in the spirit of old times as if evoking the old spirit. That is why it is historically of great importance.
In addition to shops selling clothes and shoes, there are several bookstores in Zmaj Jovina Street, as well as many cafes and restaurants.
