Meet the trilobite beetle found in Southeast Asia and India. They are named after the extinct trilobites, only based on how they look and are not related. They belong to the family Lycidae.
There is extreme sexual dimorphism between males and females. The males look like what you would expect a beetle to look like, growing to about 5 mm. The form of the females is retained from when they were larvae, as they change very little from when they hatch out of their eggs until they reach maturity. With such thick armour, they can retract their heads into their bodies when threaten.
There isn't a lot known about these beetles as their life cycle and eating habits are still mostly unknown. They have only been observed mating twice in over 200 years. With the first being in the 1930's and the last being in 1993
