A person died and dozens were injured at the annual traditional bull-taming festival, 'Jallikattu' in southern India's Madurai district, Friday, January 14, 2022.
'Jallikattu' is an Indian version of the Spanish sport that doesn't aim to kill the bulls but seeks to dominate and tame them, while plucking away bundles of money or other treats tied to their specially sharpened horns.
India's top court outlawed “Jallikattu” in 2014, saying it is cruel and not in keeping with what it described as the country's non-violent traditions.
However, the state government of Tamil Nadu passed the Jallikattu Bill in 2017, allowing the conduct of the traditional sport.
The festival marks the harvest festival of “Pongal.”
