We tested a 2023 Kia Sportage X-Pro Prestige as part of a six-vehicle compact SUV comparison test that also included the refreshed 2023 Ford Escape, the redesigned 2023 Honda CR-V, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson, the all-new 2023 Mazda CX-50 and the 2023 Nissan Rogue.
The six SUVs were put through a battery of tests: The judges drove each of them on the same evaluation loop, we took them on a 300-plus-mile route to determine real-world road trip fuel economy, we measured each one’s cargo area, checked car-seat fitment, assessed safety and driver-assist features, and rated their value for the money.
From its first and second rows of seats to the way it rides, the Sportage delivers impressive comfort. It also has interior design and technology that impressed our judges – particularly its curved display that incorporates the digital instrument panel and center touchscreen. They were less impressed with certain aspects of the driving experience, however, as the Sportage was dinged for its braking feel, handling and quietness – areas where the SUV may have done better if it hadn’t been the off-road-oriented X-Pro version.
