Over the centuries there were many different methods of execution used to condemn a prisoner or a criminal and execute them. Some of the most brutal methods include Hanging, Drawing and Quartering and also some countries even used animals to kill someone. But there was a public execution method used in many different countries across the Medieval period which was very brutal. The Breaking Wheel was a horrific ordeal for a serious criminal to be put through and someone would be strapped onto the wheel.
They were then beaten with iron rods and their legs would shatter and also their arms would be broken. This was very painful, and then an executioner would sometimes execute someone by smashing them with the wheel. But after this they were beaten very badly and then were left for dead, but some people were also hacked at by an axeman or were even burned following the ordeal. The Breaking Wheel is also known as The Catherine Wheel, and was used in countries such as France, Germany, The Holy Roman Empire and Scotland.
