This is Part 7 - How I put the wrap strike guard on and seal the axes. The strike looks cool but its purpose is to protect the axe handle.
I hand split many cords of firewood every year, 5 to 6 cords on average. But, inevitably, I do contact the handle while splitting every now and again... usually when I reach across the rounds. Proper splitting technique isn't complicated but having the strike guard just helps protect the handles, and it adds some head weight the axe as well. The process isn't complicated, I use 1/4 inch natural twine from the hardware store and die them red or whatever color goes with the custom axes I build.
The Humboldt Axes have Emerald handles that represent the Emerald Triangle. I use crimson red wraps which represents the Redwood Coast here in Humboldt... the color scheme works well and fits our home here in Humboldt... or for all of us who live here... Homeboldt... these vintage axe heads have unique histories that deserve to live on being hung on one of my custom hot rod emerald handles...
Coming.... Part 8 - How I put the final finish up the project and my most favorite part of making custom axes for people, I get to hand them over the in the individuals I made them for... coming next...
