Former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said on Wednesday (18/1)
there was still time to work out a deal under which his Freedom
Alliance could back Italy's new government if it got a precise
date for elections in return. But he told a news conference as new
premier Lamberto Dini was chairing his first cabinet meeting that
the conservative alliance would oppose the government in a
parliamentary confidence vote without a commitment to early polls.
"There is a period of time, a few days" to work out an accord,"
Berlusconi said.
