Kenya joined the rest of the world in marking world rhino day yesterday, in Nanyuki, Laikipia county, with the global theme for this years celebration being five rhino species forever. With only five remaining species of rhinoceros, the celebration is marked to create awareness against poaching of the black, white greater one-horned, sumatran and Javan rhinos. Environment cabinet secretary, Judy Wakhungu, stated that the government will continue to protect the 1,149 rhinos remaining in the country and an action plan to protect 2000 black rhinos of the east african sub-species had been completed, adding that rampant poaching in the past years had culminated in a drastic decline in the rhino population, leaving behind endangered species like sudan, the only remaining male northern white rhino who lives at the ol pejeta conservancy in kenya. The event inlcuded informative plays and anti-poaching drills by the kws on wildlife conservation, with the c.s issuing equipment to protect the endangered species.kenya holds the third largest rhino population in the world after south africa and namibia.
