When you drive up to the giant denver airport a large blue demonic horse with glowing red eyes greets you at the entrance of the airport. This as an omen for the gigantic TSA line awaiting you inside. The Denver airport is indeed a haunting place for would be passengers that do not have TSA Pre-Check. We were traveling on a Sunday evening - typically a slow traffic time, but not in Denver.
As the giant TSA line meandered in and around the airport's Great Hall we experienced a great bonding experience of shared frustration with our line neighbors traveling out of Denver. The gentleman who checked our passports near the end of the line was friendly and sadly assured us that such a state of line was the norm for the Denver airport.
After spending one hour in line my bag was pulled, opened, and thoroughly examined because as the TSA agent told me - I should not store granola bars next to a large battery, because it looks like a bomb! I thanked the TSA agent for keeping us safe from granola bombers and finally headed to our gate.
The Denver airport is Colorado's largest employer (over 35,000 employees), consistently one of the busiest airports in the world (top 20 every year since 2000), and 2nd largest in the world (behind an airport in Saudi Arabia that was originally built for the Iraq war). A billion dollar upgrade is currently in the works to improve the security process but it isn't expected to be completed until 2028. The history of the Denver airport has been one of controversy, conspiracy theories, delays, and cost overruns. So in five years, 2028 might look wildly optimistic.
