I never knew my great uncle existed. I never knew my grandma had a brother who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, then known as manic depression. I never knew how deeply the mental health stigma ran, both at home and at church. Growing up, discussions about mental health were hushed, and I often heard whispers about "nervous breakdowns" and "unstable" relatives. It wasn’t until I began to understand more about mental health myself that I realized how much my family had been affected by bipolar disorder.
The stigma surrounding mental health issues, like bipolar disorder, can be incredibly isolating. My great uncle’s struggles were kept in the shadows, hidden away as if his condition was something to be ashamed of. The lack of open conversation about mental health in our community contributed to this sense of shame and secrecy. It’s a reminder of how important it is to break down these barriers and talk openly about mental health.
I think about how different things might have been if there had been more understanding and support for people with mental health conditions like bipolar disorder. How many families could have avoided the pain of silence and misunderstanding? How many lives could have been changed with a little more compassion and a lot less stigma?
