This story starts long ago in the dreamtime. 'How the birds got their colours' demonstrates Aboriginal peoples' way of using story telling to connect local landscape with representing their values and lessons.
After hearing this story, what do you think of when you see the black crow and/or coloured birds? Have they become a visual for the benefits of helping and supporting each other, versus standing alone/individual and selfish? This story beautifully represents a core mindset for Aboriginal peoples - to be relationship centred and to function for the collective good.
This favourite book is based on a story told by Mary Albert, of the Bardi people, to Aboriginal children living in Broome, Western Australia. The illustrations are adapted from their paintings of the story.
