Just before day break in Maseru on December the 9th, 1982, the apartheid South African Defense Force raided Lesotho, targeting liberation fighters who sought refuge in the country. When they were done, they had massacred 42 people in cold blood, 12 of them Basotho nationals who were either sheltering or had close ties with the activists. The day is commemorated each year with the theme: "Le Rona Re Batho" meaning We Too Are Humans.
