Surveillance video captured an attempt to blackmail a motorist on Monday in Fangchenggang City, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Video footage shows a man standing on the side of a road while playing with his smartphone and looking up now and then to check the situation.
Several minutes later, the man suddenly ran in front of an oncoming car, which hit the man, who somersaulted in the air and fell down onto the ground.
"When I drove there, I almost hit him. It seemed he thought the speed was too fast, so he gave up approaching. But Liang Fu (car owner blackmailed) slowed down in advance, so the guy thought it was safe to hit. You can tell he threw himself out .... Then, he lay down on the ground without any injuries. I'm sure he's a fraud who wouldn't let himself be hit by the car. He acted very strangely, lingering in the street. He didn't leave even [after] some people dragged him away," said a passerby who witnessed the scene.
As the man had been loitering at the scene prior to the incident, he is suspected of staging an accident with the intention of claiming compensation for injuries.
According to reports, the blackmailer was sent to hospital for treatment of any injuries, and police are investigating the case.
