Beauty pageants, are like an obsession in the Philippines. Almost a religion, even. Fiestas and other special celebrations almost always have a pageant of sorts. The Philippines boasts of holding the distinction of having the most number of local beauty pageants held annually, with most barrios from Appari to Jolo culminating their fiestas with a beauty search. Moreover, it gives us great pride and honor to send representatives to tilts like Miss International, Miss World and Miss Universe would at least make it to the 10 semi-finalists. today’s episode, we look at some of the family connections, both blood and marriage, that link our many beauty queens. Proving once and for all that beauty, as in politics, is a family affair in the Philippines. The featured beauty queens here are by no means complete and are just a sampling of the Philippines’s roster of beauty queens. These are just some of the candidates and winners whose family trees are available, and who can be connected with other candidates and winners.
Let us start with our first Filipina beauty queen. Pura Villanueva Kalaw, the first ever Carnival Queen in the Philippines. She was named the Queen of the Orient in 1908, to distinguish her from the Caucasian beauty, who was named, Queen of the Occident. Pura's daughter Maria Kalaw would later follow in her footsteps, and was crowned Ms. Philippines in 1931. The Kalaws’ connection to the Aquinos connect them to Charlie Cojuangco, whose wife was Mutya ng Pilipinas 1977 Rio Diaz. Of course, we know that her sister, Gloria Diaz, became our first Miss Universe winner in 1969.
The marriage of Pacita Aquino Gueco, to Danieling Romualdez, connects us to the Romualdez and Araneta families. Danieling’s sister, Amelia, was crowned Ms. Leyte in 1927. Meanwhile, a cousin on the Lopez side, Susan Lopez, was a finalist in the 1967 Binibining Pilipinas pageant.
A first cousin of Amelia is Imelda Romualdez, later first Lady of the Philippines, who was once Muse of Manila. The first wife of Imelda’s daughter’s husband was Aurora Pijuan, who won Miss International in 1970. A daughter in law of Imelda’s brother, Benjamin, is Yedda Kittelsvet, the country’s candidate to the Ms. International 1996.
The Marcoses connect us to the Araneta family tree. Jorge Araneta married Stella Marquez, formerly from Colombia and the first woman to win the title of Ms. International. A cousin of Jorge Araneta, Antonio Sebastian Araneta, married Gemma Cruz, the first Filipina to win the title of Ms. International in 1964. Gemma Cruz Araneta’s mother, Carmen Guerrero, married into the Nakpil family, where we have Anita Noble Nakpil, the first ever Miss Philippines. Her daughter, Annie, was Miss Batangas. Another daughter, Edith, was Miss Philippines in 1955. A granddaughter of Anita is Cynthia Barreto Nakpil, 1976 Ms. Philippines Maja.
Another Araneta, Judy, married Gerardo Roxas, son of President Manuel Roxas and Trinidad de Leon, who was Miss Philippines in 1920. A granddaughter of President Roxasis Margarita Moran, the second Filipina to win Miss Universe in 1972. Margarita Moran’s paternal grandmother, Nieves Gonzales Moran, was 1919 Queen of Pangasinan. Meanwhile, a Roxas cousin is Rosario Zaragoza, our representative to Miss Universe in 1968. Through Rosario Zaragoza’s brother’s connection through marriage, we also connect the family tree to Pilar Pilapil, Binibining Pilipinas Universe candidate for 1967.
