Vladimir Putin, inaugurated on Monday for his third term as Russia's president, laid a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Garden near the Kremlin walls on Tuesday.
The annual ceremony marks the end of the Second World War in Europe.
The former president, Dmitry Medvedev, didn't attend Tuesday's ceremony as he was preparing for his confirmation as prime minister by the State Duma, the lawmaking house of the Russian parliament.
Looking sombre, Putin followed two soldiers carrying the wreath towards the tomb. When the wreath was put in place, the president came closer, adjusting the ribbons.
After the wreath-laying ceremony, Putin watched a parade march by troops representing various branches of the Russian armed forces.
The ceremony came just after opposition activists were detained by police.
Security forces detained Alexei Navalny, a lawyer and blogger who made his name exposing corruption in the government and state corporations.
They also detained Sergei Udaltsov, the leader of a leftist movement.
