Far infrared promises to pass through the outer layers of your skin and into deeper levels of your skin to promote circulation and healing. These are definitely medical claims and I am not going to reaffirm this but rather to just test if the heat will penetrate deeper.

I did a test with multiple layers of wet t-shirts to see if the far-infrared will penetrate faster than a typical heat pad. I applied equal weights to both pads to have equal amount of pressure on both. It turns out the far infrared pad can indeed get deeper and raises the temperature around 6 degree more than a typical heating pad.

After doing this test though, I feel that the transfer might have been partially through the stored thermal mass of the UTK heating pad transferring quickly into the t-shirts. To do this properly, one might have to have a non heat conductive but clear layer to only allow the far infrared through.

In practice though, you will apply this directly to your skin over your clothes or directly. Then it appears it would transfer the heat deeper quicker. One could argue the UTK heating pad was heating longer before application and would a normal heating pad still be just as effective if you just apply it for a longer time? Something to think about and perhaps I will do more tests on this in the future.
