I completed the Rickshaw Run India in 2023 covering 3,313km frim Gangtok in the foothills of the himalayas down to Fort Kochi, Kerala on the South West coast Whats more I did it solo, so I think I've picked up one or two things on my trip that would help anyone considering taking part in this adventure in the future.
This is a serious challenge and it will not be easy. You'll be driving long disrances on unfamiliar roads with other road users who have standards far removed from that in your own country. The Rickshaw Run shouldn't be taken lightly although it is a fantastic experience if you do take the necessary care and attention to your safety and well-being.
You will breakdown and you will need to engage with the locals to get help on your journey. The Indian people are generally helpful although are often bemused to see a foreigner driving an auro rickshaw. My tips in this video will give you an insight as what to expect abd how to successfully negotiate the often hazardous Indian roads to complete the Rickshaw Run adventure.

Questions & Answers
Is 14 days sufficient time to complete the trip?
Yes. I covered 3,313km arriving early norning on Day 14 so I had several hours in hand. I also lost 36 daytime driving hours due to mechanical breakdowns so in effect I did the journey within 10 days of driving. I didn' t do any night time driving although I did start at 5am most days before it was light. On average I drove 8 to 10 hours each day I wasn't broken down. I also drove an older two stroke rickshaw which The Adventurists are gradually replacing with newer and much more reliable four stroke machines.
Are the roads in India really that bad?
Road conditions throughout India are mixed. Some of the National Highways as you head Sourh are really very good. The roads desending the hills from Gangtok are windy and potholed and progress is slow. Travelling through villages with massive speed bumps and potholes is also a nightmare. Roads tend to get better the further South you go and you can cover much greater distances on the National Highways. Avoid larger cities during the daytime as traffic congestion is a problem and if you aren't used to driving in Indian cities you are in for a massive sensory overload!
What do I do if I breakdown?
If your rickshaw is still driveable ask a local where the nearest Rickshaw Auto Mechanic is and head there. If you are completely immobile then hail a passing local rickshaw driver and ask to be taken to the nearest suitable mechanic. You will need to pay them for their time and help. Carry a tow rope with you on your journey but many local rickshaw taxi drivers will be able to pull together a makeshift tow rope. If there are no local rickshaw taxis passing ask a local if they can arrange for a mechanic to come out to you at the roadside. On the National Highways there is a central number you can call in an emergency.
What happens if I become ill?
Fortunately, I completed my adventure without any illness however many participants weren't so lucky with several being hospitalised having injections or being put on drips. My advise would be to seek medical advice as soon as possible from a doctor or even a hospital. Don't take any risk with your health. There are sensible precautions you can take to reduce the risk of illness. Be careful with the food you eat and where you get it from. I only ate at reputable hotels and restaurants during my entire trip and didn't risk the roadside stalls and cafes. Drink bottled water only and stay clear of alcohol until the finishing party. I took Charcoal tablets in case of tummy problems.
Is this really an unsupported event?
Yes it is, however it is important to follow the group's WhatsApp postings as you can pick up great advice from other participants. Whilst The Adventurists don't provide physical support they are on hand to give suggestions and guidance where needed. If you breakdown you are on your own to sort out the issue by communicating with locals. This is a big part of what makes the Rickshaw Run adventure so fascinating and challenging.
