Petra from Serbia was in a relationship with Vladimir, who was often jealous of her. After Vladimir started to become violent, Petra immediately reported the violence to the police, who undertook a risk assessment and issued a 30-day emergency restriction order. Vladimir violated the order and was sentenced to 14 days in jail. A few days after his release, Vladimir stabbed Petra to death at a football stadium. The media portrayed Petra as unfaithful, in way that indicated that she was responsible for her own death.
Watch this video based on a real-life story to find out where the system failed her and how tragedies like this can be prevented. Violence against women is the symptom, not the virus. The virus is gender inequality. No cure will come as long as ineffective prevention, protection and prosecution remain. This video was developed by the Center of Women’s Rights within the UN Women regional programme “Implementing Norms, Changing Minds,” funded by the European Union.
