Unlike last year, we have 2 engine options for 2022.
The base engine is the same motor from the Lexus LS that we tested a few weeks ago
It’s a 3.5 liter, twin turbo, V6 and it makes 389 hp which is only 8 more ponies than last year, but torque is up to 479 lbft and that IS a big difference, 78 lb/ft of torque increase
Feels a lot quicker than previous gen, power band is pretty linear which is nice, really no turbo lag, peak torque is nice and low around 2,500 RPM. Small lag, when it decides what gear to drop itself into but that’s typical and expected. It honestly doesn’t sound bad, definitely doesn’t have the same rumble but it’s still a little throaty
And then there’s the upgraded iForce Max engine. That’s the only engine that you’ll be able to get in the TRD Pro versions of these Tundras. For some of the other higher trim levels, its optional.
The iForce Max uses the same 3.5TTV6, but adds a motor generator(essentially a hybrid system) and boosts power to 437 hp and 583 lbft.
Then there’s the 10 speed transmission which is a normal auto and will be the same transmission that will be in all the next gen TNGA-F vehicles
Since this is a TNGA-F vehicle that means it’s body on frame and RWD standard with the ability to add 4x4.
4x4 vehicles will get a 2 speed transfer case and TRD Offroad vehicles will get a bunch more stuff as well which we will cover later, but let’s talk about how the truck feels on the road
Steering feels precious, feels really planted and there isn’t a lot of chatter over the back end, it really comes together quite well. The cabin is very quite, hardly any outside noise enters, im sure there’s a bit more outside noise with the TRD provand the A/T that comes on that thing.
However, the Tundra TRD Pro never really got the same respect as the 4Runner or Tacoma and that’s for a couple reasons:
1 - it was missing a lot of the tech that the others had like MTS( multi terrain select), 360 camera that could be useful on the trails.
2 - no locking differential. It only had an LSD
2022 fixes both things
In a TRD Pro you get the Fox shocks, skid plates, and this year also features a new TRD Pro front stabilizer
But you also get-
Multi-terrain select
360 cameras
Crawl control
And Electronic-locking rear diff
So its definitely a lot more off road ready and capable than the previous generation
Being a full size truck, this Tundra will be expected to do truck things like towing:
Max towing is 12,000 lbs, but there’s more to it than that. TRD Pro can tow 11,170 lbs
Tundras get a tow-haul mode (basically increasing throttle response) AND can be equipped with an air suspension leveling system in the rear, straight path assist (auto steering inputs to ensure the trailer goes back)
Payload maxes out at 1,940 lbs
These numbers are fairly good considering the Tundra has never really been class leading in these categories, its still not necessarily class leading but it gets closer to things like the F150 powerboost which can tow up to 14K lbs and has a payload range of 1800 - 3250 lbs. This does however beat out the Raptor in both categories.
These are pretty good numbers because the new architecture is stronger than before and lighter than before. In the Land Cruiser it saved 400 lbs (can we get a number for the Tundra?)
Finally, you have a selection of beds to choose from
5.5 ft
6.5 ft
8.1 ft
The tundra is actually going to be the first toyota to welcome the all new audio multimedia system, the main new feature here is the all new human machine interface(companion), which attempts to improve interactions through sight, touch, and voice activation how well does this work?
Wireless ACP/AA
Standard 8 inch touchscreen with an available 14 inch (nice functionality similar to that of a phone, pinch to zone etc.
Another potential point of contention is the camo in seats on pro, observation, there's a lot of red in here.
Heated and cooled front seats
Quite a few different audio and speaker options varying from 6 - to the premium package which includes 12 JBL Speakers
Rear seat room
Pano roof
Digital rear view mirror in 1794 and platinum
Wireless charger
Toyota safety sense 2.5
Adaptive cruise control
Lane keep assist
Auto high beams
Road sign assist
Pre collision system with pedestrian detection
Enhancements made to for low light and cyclist
