There are many reasons why your family and even your home would benefit from a crawl space encapsulation system. Let's start with a home that has a dirt or gravel base. What is keeping water, insects, gases and odors from entering your home? The answer is nothing if it's not properly encapsulated. Lets say you put your head in the crawl space right now. Do you smell a damp and musty odor? Is the air humid? Can you see water on the ground or even wet discolored areas on the crawl space walls? If you look at the wooden floor joists, do you see any mold or wood rot? In the winter, do you notice the floor above the crawl space is cold or even drafty in some cases? We have just walked you through some standard questions in our inspection process. If these are problem areas, we really want to help you.
Now that you are familiar with the symptoms of an unhealthy crawl space, lets talk about our crawl space encapsulation system installation process. First we remove any debris so that we can properly assess the walls and floor. Next we try and level the soil or gravel as much as possible. If your crawl space has a concrete floor, there is no leveling process. In most cases we recommend the first layer on the ground being our WhiteCap drainage matting. This provides additional tear resistance and protection to the liner, adds waterproofing channels and pads the floor for anyone crawling around in the area in the future to move boxes and items. The reinforced vapor barrier liner is then rolled out and cut to size for the floor and walls. This reinforced liner is very different from what you can get at the local hardware store and will not easily puncture or breakdown over time like the plastic builders throw in the crawl space. Our next step is sealing the wall and floor liners together with our waterproof tape and securing the liner to the wall with fasteners and sealant. Now that the walls and floor are sealed and secured, our installations technician will look to seal the floor joists and any air gaps with closed cell spray foam. If you have any missing, damaged or rotting vent covers or crawl space doors, we will want to replace those as well. Often times the final step in our crawl space encapsulation system is the dehumidifier. We use a specialized high capacity dehumidifier designed specifically for the crawl space environment. This will help clean the air, control humidity and protect whatever you decide to store in your encapsulated crawl space.
