Batteries contain a mixture of sulphuric acid and water and when they leak out, and will corrode any metal parts (like the terminals) they come into contact with. Overtime, this reaction causes a visible powdery-looking substance. Since this substance indicates battery fluid leaking, put on some gloves to avoid contact with you skin.
