A suggested final stage for working with Assimil manuals - after internalizing the material by repeated shadowing of the text as well as copying it out in scriptorium, standing in front of a mirror to simulate the situation of face to face conversation, the dialogues can be practiced in three phases: 1) speaking in them in conversational tone as written, 2) substituting a number of other words to produce a variation on the theme, and 3) using the dialog as a prompt to ad lib longer conversations.
