The strongest reason for promoting self-organization and implicit learning in your practice environment is that the skills will be more durable under pressure. Meaning that the learner (athlete) will thrive under pressure, rather than try to rely on explicit technical keys learned in practice. Focusing on explicit technical keys during high-stakes games is distracting and takes away from more useful trains of thought. Also, one cannot reach a state of flow if he or she is focusing on technical focus points. Strategy, communication, breathing, and emotional regulation are some of the more important things during performance.

Part of great coaching requires some out of the box thinking and creativity, in order to design and present a training environment where deep learning can happen. This movie clip dramatizing implicit learning, but I find is useful for getting the point across. Nevertheless, it's important that I point out the "jacket on, jacket off" exercises lack both representative design and perception-action coupling.
