I'm doing something crazy: I'm growing a citrus tree hedge in Zone 8A! This is the craziest thing I've ever done, because I live in North Carolina where it's too cold for planting citrus trees in ground...or is it? I'm experimenting with high quality cold hardy citrus, some protection, and a lot of planning to make this work!
This is going to be a long term experiment, and I invite you all to follow along. If you live in Zone 8, but you think it's too cold to grow top quality citrus in ground, it may be possible with some planning and a few techniques. This is the first part of the experiment, where I show you the cold hardy citrus varieties I am growing in-ground. These varieties of citrus are all dwarf citrus trees grafted on trifoliate rootstock.
I hope to prove that growing citrus in Zone 8 is possible, and there are many zone 8 citrus varieties available with some ingenuity.
