Moët & Chandon Impérial Brut Review:
Founded in 1743 by Claude Moët, the house earned the second part of its name when Pierre-Gabriel Chandon married into the family in 1833. Now part of the LVMH group, Moët & Chandon produces 28 million bottles per year.
[01:30] Robe & Perlage:
With a deep, golden hue that's fairly clear, Impérial promises to be a relatively mature wine.
In terms of perlage, there are many refined bubbles that glide gracefully to the surface.
[02:43] Nose & Bouquet:
Featuring a fragrant and vivid nose with some complexity, there are hints of almond croissants, green apples and honey in the first nose. In the second, there are faint notes of white flowers before zesty lemon curd.
[03:25] Palate & Taste:
Yeasty and quite mature with a dry yet fruity flavour, Impérial is an interesting and reliable Champagne.
Opening on cranberry and ginger, with a tough of green apples, there's a hint of citrus in the heart as well as brioche. Impérial then ends on a medium-long Virginia tobacco and limestone finish.
[05:15] Overall Experience:
With its iconic and recognisable velvet label, Impérial is a well-presented bottle. The golden plaque is reasonable whilst the cork didn't seem too old.
As for the value for money, Moët & Chandon comes in at around the $50 whereas it's around 30€ in France. Therefore, there's a bit of jump to get it across the Pacific.
As for the value, Moët is not necessarily the best Champagne but one of the most reliable brands with which you'll often be satisfied.
[06:45] Best Pairings:
Being a dry and mature but relatively classic Champagne, Impérial is versatile to pair.
It goes particularly well with salty dishes and it can be enjoyed with a number of starters such as pâté, oysters and appetisers. As for mains, seafood and white meat are the best options.
Otherwise, pizza or barbecue are excellent choices if a little low brow.
Alternatively, you could consider hard cheeses such as comté and beaufort or even soft cheeses such as a young brie. However, we wouldn't recommend blues as they're quite overpowering.
Meanwhile, desserts are best avoided as Impérial is too dry.
Finally, a classic Colorado shade cigar would be ideal in terms of tobacco. Maduro wrappers would be too full-bodied whilst Connecticut may be too aromatic.
Conclusion:
Enjoyed between 8 and 10°C, Impérial won't let you down. Although it's not the best in this price point, it's the safest choice that will please crowds and go well with many dishes.
