The Rockwall Trail is a 55 km superlative-laden feast, traversing three alpine passes through subalpine meadows and past impressive hanging glaciers. The trail's defining feature is a single, massive limestone cliff, towering in some locations more than 900 m (2953 feet) above the trail below. It is described as one of the finest backpacking routes in the Canadian Rockies, featuring high passes and the famous “Rockwall”. Due to the elevation changes between campsites, the Rockwall Trail is one of the harder multi-day hikes in the Canadian Rockies.
Growing up I've driven through Highway 93 (the Banff-Windermere Highway) countless times and have always seen the signs for the Rockwall's trailheads. This summer I was finally able to complete the entire trail and certainly was not disappointed. The breathtaking views and relentless elevation gains/losses made for an amazing adventure. The trail is typically done over 3 or 4 nights but due to time restrictions we hiked the trail over 3 days (2 nights). We did the North to South route starting at the Paint Pots trailhead and ending at the Floe Lake parking lot.
