There is a place for bottle feeding, but many women unnecessarily introduce bottles and teats without understanding how it may affect breastfeeding. Experienced midwife and breastfeeding consultant, Dr Robyn Thompson, encourages pregnant and breastfeeding women to be well informed about the implications bottle-feeding may have on their breastfeeding journey. Based on her 50 years of experience and her PhD. research, Dr Robyn suggests that the unnecessary introduction of a bottle and teat to a baby increases the risk of oral confusion and breast refusal. However, by observing some gentle principles, it is possible to combine breastfeeding with bottle feeding.
