The time trial progress continues. To my memory, this is the first Worldwide Top 10 I've reentered in several years. The last being reentering the Worldwide Top 10 of N64 Bowser's Castle back in 2017.
This was always one of my better tracks. Had the American Record numerous times, slotting as high as 3rd Worldwide years ago with a run that could have been the first 1:15 but lost well over 100 milliseconds on the last turn all 3 laps (my old 01:16.224). I always had high WR potential here since 2009, being another track that's been bittersweet that I never capitalized on the true extent of my potential when I was in my prime from 2010-2011.
Feels good to get back on a Worldwide Top 10 again after so many years. This run isn't anything special or near my potential. Merely a run that "checks off all the boxes" so to say that grants me back within the Top 10.
Lap 1: 25.273 - the fastest lap of the run, and the best driven lap of the run. Nothing too noteworthy. A textbook lap for an average mid 25.2 lap 1 with average paced driving but not exceptional driving. Only noteworthy mistake is the alignment after the last mini turbo into lap 2.
Lap 2: 25.305 - the slowest lap of the run, and the worst driven lap of the run. I got the perfect chain wheelie entering the lap (which helps a ton at this high level despite starting your drift shortly after it). However, my alignment was poor from the last mini turbo of lap 1 into the first turn of lap 2. Peak ideal scenario is having the slightest right to left alignment entering each lap that perfectly scoops you a little bit to the left to glide right against the fence. Having a bit of a wider entrance into the lap and a left to right angle made it so I scoop to the right at the top of the slope before the first time. May not seem like much, but with how short of a track this is and minimal opportunities for time save, this was a costly error. The biggest error was my alignment out of the mushroom lap 2. Notoriously one of the more harder post-mushroom alignments in most time trials to be at full speed out of the mushroom with your mini turbo, align perfectly to barely not scrape the fence to your right, the blue ramp to your left, and the furthest fence to your left at the following turn. Alignment was poor, had to turn in my wheelie, and caused a horrible turn into the low ramp as this entire section strings itself together. The last turn was extremely average and a near-late wheelie after the mini turbo release caused yet another poor alignment into lap 3.
Lap 3: 25.290 - a much better lap than what it was. As discussed above, the alignment suffered into this lap, and I got a drop chain wheelie before the first turn. This was the worst alignment, being dreadfully far wide entering the first turn, losing a good chunk of time. It doesn't appear on the speedometer, but I slightly touch heavier grass on the left grass patch on the alignment into the mushroom. The post-mushroom alignment was excellent and the turn into the low ramp was spot on. I had no intentions of getting a side trick on the low ramp (or any attempts) but GCN Controller things obviously. When you get a side trick here and you do your normal analog movements expecting an up trick, you manipulate your air time and movement to an extent. I landed nearly in the grass patch and so far to the right I almost hit the mole patch you pass by miles at this pace. I thought the run was over here, as trying to get an alignment from this far away and not getting thrown into the grass patches is unlikely. I got lucky air time over the 2nd to last grass patch before the final turn, and did a safety stored drift mid air to guarantee a shot at the last turn. This is a fair bit slower than an optimal manual hopping last turn. Still good enough for 10th WW.
I've failed far better runs than this in years past, so I'm most content I at least got a time to be back on this WW Top 10. Can easily get 2nd WW here and perhaps a bit more if the cards are dealt in my favor. We'll see. Thanks for watching.
