STORYLINE
Clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces broke out for a second night in Istanbul's Sultangazi neighbourhood on Saturday.
Riot police deployed tear gas and water cannons to disperse an angry crowd of about 200 who had gathered in this conservative area of Istanbul, inhabited mostly by Kurds and Alawites.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands marched in the central Taksim Square, where the protests initially started over development plans that would have replaced the square's park with buildings.
Also on Saturday night, police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse some 5-thousand anti-government protesters in central Ankara.
The protesters were blocking traffic and attacking water cannon vehicles which at one point collided while trying to reverse at the same time.
Also in Ankara, protesters piled tyres outside the US Embassy and set them on fire as clashes erupted between the police and protesters.
As Turkey's biggest wave of anti-government protests in decades entered its second week with no signs of waning, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's governing party rejected calls for early elections, and dismissed the protests as an attempt by the opposition to topple the government.
The protests were sparked by outrage over a violent police action to break up an environmental protest in Isanbul's Taksim Square on May 31, and have spread to dozens of cities across Turkey.
Three people have died - two protesters and a policeman - and thousands have been injured so far.
They represent the first serious challenge to Erdogan's leadership.
