H.G. Wells wrote a terrifying story in "The War of the Worlds." Aliens, or Martians, descend on Earth to take our planet for their own. Do they want feed off humans, enslave us, or both? How does anyone survive such a circumstance? Most people in the story think the military will dispatch these invaders in no time. They sure got a dose of reality when the military gave up after just a few days. Those who survived, were they smart or lucky, or both? The narrator survived the invasion. His wife and brother survived as well. He may care more about his brother than his wife as he tells us his brother's story of how he survived the attack, but says nothing about his wife's. Although, his brother's story is pretty interesting. Maybe his wife's was not. The story is told six years after the invasion ended, so we get the benefit of hindsight from the narrator.
He wrote it between 1895 and 1897 and drew inspiration from scientific "discoveries: by Giovanni Schiaparelli and Stéphane Javelle in the mid and late 1800s. He also meant for the Martians to represent Germany and the threat they pose on Europe at the time. The British almost lost against the aliens and Wells may have been warning that the British arrogance in their military might could be their downfall.
