One of the world's most inaccessible and difficult areas is the Southern Ocean, which surrounds the continent of Antarctica. This harsh climate is defined by two major physical features: the Antarctic Circle and the Drake Passage. These components are essential to the regulation of the climate, marine biodiversity, and global ocean circulation. To really appreciate the Drake Passage and the Antarctic Circle and the special ecosystems they support, one must have a thorough understanding of them.
Between the northern extremity of the Antarctic Peninsula and the southern tip of South America (Cape Horn, Chile), there is a body of water called the Drake Passage that is about 800 kilometers wide. The Drake Passage is known for its dangerous waters and strong currents, and it was named for the English explorer Sir Francis Drake who unintentionally traveled through these waters in the sixteenth century. The Antarctic Circumpolar circulation (ACC), the biggest and strongest oceanic circulation in the world, must pass through this crucial chokepoint. The Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans are connected by the ACC, which travels eastward around Antarctica while carrying enormous volumes of water—an estimated 135 million cubic meters per second.
These and more is elaborated on in this video.
