Soviet filmmakers saw their art not just as a form of entertainment but also as a way of instructing the masses in revolutionary Marxist thinking. Cinematic pioneers like Sergei Eisenstein gave rise to the study of editing as the dark art of the medium and in his experiments with cutting film gave us much of the terminology that we still use today when working in post production.
