Like so many of his generation, Guy Schrag wanted to join the service and help the war effort and, attracted to the romance of flying, joined the Army Air Force. He was called to active duty in February 1943 after over a year of gunnery school, aviation school, pre-flight school, and navigation school which included meteorology and celestial navigation. Guy was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. As a navigator on B17s with the 452nd Bomb Group (Heavy), he saw 25 missions over Europe and received, among his medals, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. Guy speaks of the camaraderie of his crew and other flight crews and remembers the loss of friends. After the war, he worked as a civilian with the U.S. Army and spent 27 years in the Air Force Reserve, retiring as a Lt. Colonel.
