Summer means beach days, right?! We have been counting down the days until our trip to Cape May, New Jersey to check out their famous beaches, the Victorian charm, wine tasting, history, and so much more!
Cape May has been a beach destination for decades. In fact, it received National Historic Landmark recognition in 1976 for some of the country's oldest wooden sea wood structures. Did you know that Cape May got it's name from a misspelling? Originally named for Cornelius Mey, a Dutch captain with the Dutch East India Company, but the paperwork misspelled his name and the wrong spelling stuck to this day!
We explore all of the top sites in and around Cape May starting with their pristine, white sand beaches. The water might be a little cold early in the season, but its the perfect way to unwind. Walking distance from Cape May Beach is Washington Street Mall, an outdoor promenade full of unique shops and restaurants. We had to try the iconic Kohr Brothers frozen custard since its a staple of the Jersey shore. The orange and vanilla swirl was just as good as the stories say!
There is so much history around Cape May and one of the best ways to experience that history is through a Trolley Tour. There are so many options so there is something for everyone. One tour covers Cape May's history is the Underground Railroad. Did you know that Harriet Tubman has direct ties to the town? She worked in Cape May to save money to fund her work on the Underground Railroad and the Harriet Tubman Museum covers her life and history and that of her fellow abolitionists in Cape May.
And I bet you don't immediately think of World War II when you think of the Jersey shore. Given its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the Delaware Bay, Cape May served as a key location during the war. Make sure you check out the Lookout Tower and bunker to learn more about Fort Miles.
We end our vacation in Cape May visiting its historic lighthouse. Typically open during the day, we visited during a special nighttime tour of the stars. We climb the 199 steel steps up almost 14 stories to see the sunset and views from the Lighthouse. We even met the light keeper who shared stories of the historic lighthouse.
Join us for a weekend beach vacation!
