Coming into prominence as a Youtube sensation who covered indie songs and having fans all around the world pining for her, Cherie Ko has become a darling of the Singapore music scene because of her musical talent and hardworking streak.
While Cherie plays in numerous bands such as Obedient Wives Club, Bored Spies and her latest musical project, Tomgirl, it is the electronic bedroom project, Pastelpower, that is wholly her.
Inspired by her vivid imagination, French singer-actress Francoise Hardy, and 1960s psychedelic pop, Pastelpower weaves off-kilter tales of quirky and eccentric characters from her cleverly crafted imaginary world. Since 2012, Pastelpower has performed in numerous festivals, and has released a cassette of demo recordings, a live two-track EP, as well as a series of music videos titled Pastelpower Broadcast.
This interview with Cherie Ko was made for the retrospective exhibition, So Happy: 50 Years Of Singapore Rock, held at The Substation from 8 to 26 April 2015.
So Happy: 50 Years Of Singapore Rock is a project by creative agency fFurious that is supported by the Singapore Memory Project's irememberSG Fund, The Substation, Antalis SEA and Thunder Rock School as part of the Singapore50 (SG50) Celebrations.
