(20 Sep 2021) WINSLET ON EMMY WIN: 'I AM THE LUCKIEST GIRL IN THE WORLD'
British actor Kate Winslet praised her husband Ned Smith for his role in teaching their son Bear to read, while Winslet was working on her Emmy Award-winning show "Mare of Easttown."
"My husband, Ned, was so extraordinary," said Winslet, speaking after she picked up the Lead Actress in a Limited Series award at Sunday night's ceremony.
"He's really severely dyslexic. And yet he homeschooled our son Bear for five months and then COVID happened. So he continued homeschooling. So he taught Bear to read. And he's - Ned himself has the reading age of about a nine year old - so he did all of that. So everything that we sort of went through together was just massive. And, you know, we created lots of extraordinary memories. But we did go through this together as a family. And so it just feels wonderful, feels really wonderful."
Winslet also took the time to praise the cast and crew of the HBO drama who were thrown together during the pandemic to work on the show.
"It means so much to so many people, not just me. I mean, truly like this show was a very, very unique experience. The crew were unbelievable, a proper community of people who really stuck together. You know, we shot it either side of the bulk of COVID, you know, it was really hardcore and and also our cast. I mean, they were just amazing, especially our young actors, some for whom it was their first job. They were incredibly nervous, difficult subject matter. So we really had to kind of get behind them and surround them with a lot of support. And it just meant so much to them to be in the show. So this represents that work that we all collectively did. And I really feel so proud."
"Mare of Easttown" took home four awards on the night, including Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for Julianne Nicholson and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for Evan Peters.
