Chicago is bringing the real razzle-dazzle back to London! Winner of six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy, and now starring Academy Award-Winner Cuba Gooding Jnr in his West End stage debut, the sexiest, sassiest, most sophisticated Broadway musical in history is celebrating 21 years of standing ovations in style.
What is Chicago About?
Based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, Chicago tells the story of the deadly nightclub singer Roxie Hart, her cell-block rival Velma Kelly and the smooth-talking lawyer Billy Flynn. The show features music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse. Ann Reinking choreographed the 1996 Broadway revival in the style of Bob Fosse, and Walter Bobbie directed. Barry and Fran Weissler produced.
Since opening in New York in 1996, Chicago has gone on to play in 36 different countries. Chicago became the West End’s longest running revival of a musical after running in London for 15 years. The show first opened on 18 November 1997 at the Adelphi Theatre, garnering rave reviews and becoming an immediate sell-out hit. In 1998, Chicago won both the Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production and the Critics Circle Drama Award for Best Musical.
