TUPELO, MISSISSIPPI - TPD (Tupelo Police Department) released footage of an incident where a physical altercation went viral.
On July 13 at 3:34 p.m., TPD officers stopped a black Honda SUV on South Gloster Street just south of Crosstown because the driver was not wearing a seat belt. During the traffic stop, officers learned the passenger had two active arrest warrants.
As the passenger got out of the vehicle, an officer saw him drop a clear plastic bag. As one officer began to handcuff him, he spun around and began throwing punches, striking one officer in the face. During the ensuing struggle, the suspect at one point had his hand on one of the officer’s holstered firearm.
The officers sprayed the suspect with pepper spray and one officer “was forced to strike the suspect several times with a fist in an attempt to stop his assault”; however, the suspect continued to resist even after being taken to the ground. He was eventually secured in handcuffs. The clear plastic bag and its contents, which police suspected to be illegal narcotics, were collected as evidence. The officers were also aware the suspect had a history of resisting arrest and was also on parole with the Mississippi Department of Corrections for sale of cocaine, credit card fraud and burglary.
In addition to the active warrants, the suspect was charged with two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer and taken to Lee County Jail with a $300,000 bond. Additional charges, including drug charges, will be pursued through the grand jury process, officials said.
