According to the World Food Programme, the number of people facing acute food insecurity has more than doubled since 2019, from 135 million to 345 million around the world. The food crisis has multiple causes and has indeed been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Achieving “Zero Hunger” is the second Sustainable Development Goal adopted by the United Nations as part of the 2030 Agenda. This objective is both crucial and difficult to achieve. It requires combining an array of effective public policies and substantial investments.
Matthieu Le Grix, head of AFD’s Agriculture, Rural Development and Biodiversity Division, takes a look at the current situation and the solutions that need to be implemented to reduce food insecurity. What role should AFD Group play? Support public and private investment, but also back effective public policies for the benefit of the most vulnerable.
