Rectum is the last part of the large intestine which ends in anal canal. From there the motions are excreted. Rectum is a receptacle for storing motion and it gets filled and then the anal canal gets opened and rectum contracts ad motion comes out, this rectum is supported with some sort of ligaments that supports the pelvis to keep it in its position. Due to various reasons like increased intrabdominal pressure old age and certain congenital anomalies where the supports will be weak and the rectum starts coming out. Prolapse is nothing but a tissue or any organ coming out of a hole. Here rectum starts prolapsing through the anal canal and that starts coming out, so what is the treatment? Rectal prolapsed, being a mechanical issue and the supports being weak, whenever there is a pressure from the intraabdominal site, trying to push motion out, he whole organ starts coming out through the anal canal and it has to be pushed back. There are various stages of Rectal prolapsed. Sometimes there will be only the lining membrace called as the mucosa. That itself prolaspes that is a minor issue and can be treated by similar procedures but if it is a total Rectal prolapsed it can be treated by different stages depending on the procedures you have done and Rectal prolapsed has to be done by surgical procedures. Again depending on stage of Rectal prolapsed, you will be able to do surgeries without opening the abdomen. Where there in large prolapsed, there are certain procedures which have to be done through abdomen or through laparoscopic procedures, pull the rectum that is prolapsing out and fix it with a different means. Sometimes we have to even remove a part of the large intestine to fix it. so these are the surgical procedures medical procedures won’t help for Rectal prolapse unless it is very minor w e may try some physiotherapy, exercise and yoga will help in reducing small Rectal prolapses. This is how it is best treated.
