Niger Refuses to Open Border with Benin, Blames France of Training Terrorists | Firstpost Africa
Niger has decided to keep its borders with Benin closed over security concerns, specifically terrorist activities, which they allege are being fuelled by the French. The Prime Minister of Niger, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, said that French bases in Benin are training terrorists to destabilise Niger. He has further urged businesses to ship their items to Togo, while still keeping its borders open with Algeria, Libya, and Chad. Meanwhile, Benin itself has also blocked border crossings to Niger across the river between the neighbours. This comes as tit-for-tat border disputes between the countries are on a rise. Earlier this month, Benin had blocked China’s first oil shipment from Niger over the same border conflict.
