During the Second World War there were a large amounts of war crimes committed by different nations throughout the conflict. Following the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union named Operation Barbarossa, the Germany army tried to make as many gains against the Soviets as possible. However as the Wehrmacht advanced, a specific detachment followed their advancements and committed horrific crimes. The Einsatzgruppen were responsible for the massacre and mass killings of civilians within Nazi-occupied territory. It was estimated that of all those killed during the Holocaust, the Einsatzgruppen killed around 2 million people.
Friedrich Jeckeln was a First World War veteran who rose to prominence during Hitler's Nazi Germany, and he eventually became a SS Higher and Police Leader within the Soviet Union after Barbarossa. It was under his leadership that the Einsatzgruppen carried out horrific mass-killings, and Jeckeln was deeply involved in the planning of these massacres. It was estimated that during his time in power, he was responsible for the deaths of well over 100,000 civilians.
Jeckeln was eventually captured by the Soviets, and he was placed on trial in the Riga Trials, in the city where he brought terror too. It was easy for the judges to prosecute him, and for his crimes he was sentenced to death. In front of a huge crowd in Victory Square, he was executed.
