The Time is Now: Reshaping the Systems and Institutions that Intersect with Race, Health and Climate Justice
CCHE Convening 2021
Dr. Camara Jones, Emory University Rollins School of Public Health & Morehouse School of Medicine
In 2020, George Floyd’s murder was captured on camera as he begged for his life. Months later, Dr. Susan Moore made headlines when she filmed a video accusing staff at an Indiana hospital where she was being treated for COVID-19 of racial discrimination before ultimately succumbing to COVID-related complications. Though different circumstances, the passings of Mr. Floyd and Dr. Moore demonstrate the inextricable links between health, climate, and race, as the communities most impacted by climate impacts and communities of color who are also disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and other health concerns. In this opening plenary session, keynote speaker, Dr. Camara Jones will set the tone for the day by highlighting the deep connections and links between race and health inequities, and how these links further exacerbate vulnerability to climate threats. This session will aid attendees in understanding the impacts of these systemic injustices so they are better equipped to create solutions to address them.
