There's no doubt that if you're a novice sharpener that you're sporting the bald arm and leg look, maybe even the bald belly, too. (Seriously). We've all been there as knife or tool sharpeners, especially straight razor honers. To combat the perpetual cancer arm look, I've taken to cutting individual hairs on the back of my hand and wrist areas rather than taking an entire patch off any one place. I will usually test along 2-3 places on the blade with 1-2 hairs being cut to determine the sharpness and condition of the blade. It's every bit as indicative as shaving a whole patch, although not nearly as fun or crowd gathering. But it will allow you to blend in amongst the non-sharpeners around you.
