Underwater volcano eruptions occur frequently, yet they are difficult to directly observe. A new study in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems uses hydroacoustic imagery and ROV sampling to better understand the eruptive process of underwater volcanoes and the types of rock formations they cause.
This video examines the 2011-2012 eruption off the coast of El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands of Spain. The video incorporates ROV footage, aerial photos, and model images constructed by the scientists out of hydroacoustic and bathymetric data.
