Way back in the day, a friend and I would discover several glitches in Ikari Warriors for the NES, most of which involved the blue player in the 2nd port. One of my favorite glitches allowed player 2 to change a tank into a helicopter. Nearly a decade later, I’d post this particular glitch to my then new website in the late 1990s. You can see the explanation directly at davidwonn.kontek.net/nes.html or by typing geocities.com/TimesSquare/Maze/7751/nes.html into archive.org to see the very original location.
In a nutshell, player 1 must partially pass up player 2 while P2 is continuously exiting and re-entering his tank. There seem to be designated hotspots where this works, approximately located on the vertical axis of where a helicopter appears later in the mission. This works in many places in all 4 missions, but you’ll need a lot of trial and error to get it right.
Note that the helicopter will have glitchy graphics, since the programmers never expected anyone to have a helicopter so early in the game. The only downside is that it is unsafe to exit the helicopter, as it will likely disappear if you do. Furthermore, this prevents you from sharing the helicopter ride with P1, which is normally possible where the real helicopter spawns.
If you want to do this solo as I did, just start a ONE player game, kill off two lives, then press ABBA on the second controller to spawn P2 when you get to the two tanks. Have P1 keep moving forward while you get P2 into a tank and into the proper part of the screen. Eventually you’ll create the helicopter, at which point you can kill off the last life of P1 and soar through the entire stage as P2 if you’re careful enough to keep refueling. Enjoy!
