📝 Myocardial Infarction (MI):
🔍 Definition: A Myocardial Infarction occurs when blood flow to a part of the heart muscle is blocked for a long enough time that part of the heart muscle is damaged or dies. This is usually caused by a blockage in one or more coronary arteries.
📋 Causes: The most common cause is the rupture of an atherosclerotic plaque, leading to a blood clot that obstructs the coronary artery. Other causes include coronary artery spasms and embolisms.
🩺 Symptoms: Classic signs include chest pain or discomfort (often described as pressure or squeezing), pain radiating to the left arm, neck, or jaw, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, and lightheadedness. Women may experience less typical symptoms, such as fatigue, indigestion, or anxiety.
💊 Treatment: Immediate treatment includes administering aspirin to prevent further clotting, oxygen if needed, nitroglycerin to reduce chest pain, and sometimes morphine. Reperfusion therapy, such as thrombolytics (clot-busting drugs) or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), is crucial to restore blood flow.
