The Diminished Scale (8 note Octatonic Scale) is THE great connector. Here I discuss some triads and chords or shapes derived from it and how to superimpose them as a springboard for fresh linear and improvisational ideas. I talk about being subtle with any patterns ie: please never show how you took the "rabbit out of the hat" but rather, mask the patterns and shapes and morph them with what you suddenly hear.
"The best players have all sorts of architecture above the chords they are playing"
- Miles Davis
One of the characteristics of my style is that I can take a dominant chord and do a lot of different things with it, utilizing suspensions and moving around that particular sound and really just developing it.
-McCoy Tyner in an interview with Ben Sidran on September 23, 1985.
