Muscles of the shoulder girdle:
Originate on the neck, back and thoracic region and attach to the scapula or humerus.
Joins the forelimb to the trunk and is responsible for coordinating the movements of the limb, trunk, head and neck.
They can be divided into a superficial and a deep layer:
Superficial layer of the girdle musculature:
Trapezius muscle (m. trapezius)
Sternocleidomastoid muscle (m. sternocleidomastoideus)
Brachiocephalic muscle (m. brachiocephalicus)
Sternocephalic muscle (m. sternocephalicus)
Omotransverse muscle (m. omotransversarius)
Broadest muscle of the back (m. lastissimus dorsi)
Superficial pectoral muscle (m. pectoralis superficialis)
Deep layer of the girdle musculature:
Provides the muscular suspension of the thorax between the limbs and plays a major role in the movement of the neck and limbs. It comprises:
Deep pectoral muscle (m. pectoralis profundus),
Subclavian muscle (m. subclavius),
Rhomboid muscle (m. rhomboideus) and
Ventral serrate muscle (m. serratus ventralis).
